Since sound has existed, it has been used to induce emotion and entertain living beings. Music can evoke a memory or feeling, music is a phenomena that allows us to change our mood instantly.

The Montreal Neurological Institute & Hospital carried out some studies and research and discovered that when somebody listens to music it releases dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain which is responsible for motivation and addicted and what attracts us to tangible things like delicious food.

When you listen to a new song, it ignites an excitement of what may come next. Dopamine – the feel good hormone- is released during anticipation – which is what we experience listening to new music. We also experience this listening to our favourite songs are we are anticipating our favourite part of the song and what emotions come with that.

Dopamine is also reward-inducing. We use music, for example purchasing a ticket to a music festival or concert as a reward for working hard all week.

Music is powerful – it can evoke all emotions from sadness to elation. Music is a way in which people can express themselves and determine their personality.
